Skinoren Cream Uses, Benifits, Side Effects & Price

What Is Skinoren Cream?

Skinoren Cream is a prescription topical treatment containing 20% azelaic acid as the active ingredient. Azelaic acid is a naturally occurring dicarboxylic acid found in grains like wheat and barley. It’s manufactured by Bayer/Leo Laboratories and comes in 10g, 20g, and 30g tubes.

Skinorenis prescription-only in most countries and is for external use only.

Uses of Skinoren Cream

Skinoren is approved mainly for dermatological conditions. Key uses include:

Condition

How Skinoren Helps

Acne vulgaris

Primary use. Kills Propionibacterium acnes bacteria, reduces keratin build-up that blocks pores, and decreases inflammation

Rosacea

Treats papulopustular rosacea by reducing redness, swelling, and rashes around the nose

Acne scars & hyperpigmentation

Lightens dark spots, post-acne marks, and evens skin tone due to azelaic acid’s ability to reduce abnormal melanocyte activity

Blackheads & whiteheads

Regulates keratin production to stop pores from clogging

Skin texture & fine lines

Improves evenness of skin texture and stimulates collagen production

Important: Skinoren Cream should only be used to treat acne. You should not use it for any other skin condition unless advised by a doctor.

How Skinoren Works

Azelaic acid has 3 main actions:

  1. Antibacterial: Kills P. acnes, the bacteria largely responsible for acne.
  2. Keratolytic: Inhibits proliferation of keratinocytes and normalizes epidermal differentiation, preventing follicular hyperkeratosis that blocks pores.
  3. Anti-inflammatory: Reduces skin inflammation associated with acne, making skin less red and swollen.

It also reduces the fraction of free fatty acids in skin surface lipids.

Benefits of Skinoren Cream

  • Effective for mild to moderate acne
  • Non-antibiotic option: Unlike clindamycin or erythromycin, it doesn’t contribute to antibiotic resistance
  • Safe for long-term use: Clinical experience for continuous use up to 1 year, though it should not be used continuously for more than 12 months at a time
  • No sun sensitivity: Does not cause photosensitivity, so it can be applied during the day. Sunscreen is still recommended
  • Suitable for sensitive skin: Considered gentle and free from harsh chemicals and artificial fragrances
  • Additional perks: Brightens skin, reduces blackheads, improves texture, and helps with fine lines

Results are not instant. Most people see improvement within 4 to 8 weeks of regular use. For hyperpigmentation, it may take longer.

How to Use Skinoren Cream Correctly

Dosage: Apply to affected areas twice daily, morning and evening.

Step-by-step application:

  1. Cleanse: Wash with water or a mild, non-abrasive cleanser.
  2. Dry: Pat skin completely dry. Applying to damp skin can increase irritation.
  3. Apply: Use a pea-sized amount for the entire face. Rub gently into skin.
  4. Moisturize: Wait 10–15 minutes, then use a lightweight moisturizer.
  5. Sunscreen: Apply broad-spectrum SPF 30+ during the day.

Quantity guide: ∼2.5cm or 1 inch of cream is enough for the whole face. Avoid excessive amounts.

Pro tips for sensitive skin:

  • Start on alternate days if irritation occurs
  • If excessive irritation happens, reduce to once daily or pause for a few days
  • Do not apply just before a bath, shower, or swimming
  • Avoid contact with eyes

Duration: Use regularly for several months for best results. Distinct improvement usually appears after ∼4 weeks.

Side Effects

Like all medicines, Skinoren can cause side effects. Most are local and improve during treatment.

Common side effects:

  • Mild burning or stinging sensation
  • Itching
  • Redness/erythema
  • Dryness
  • Skin peeling
  • Temporary tingling

Rare/serious side effects:

  • Severe itching, peeling, or burning
  • Rash, swelling of face/eyes, contact dermatitis
  • Hypersensitivity reactions
  • Worsening of skin condition
  • Allergic reaction

If severe irritation occurs, reduce frequency or stop and consult a doctor.

Overdose: No known cases from topical use. Risk of acute intoxication is unlikely even with large area application or accidental ingestion.

Reporting: In the UK, report via Yellow Card Scheme at mhra.gov.uk/yellowcard.

Precautions & Contraindications

Do not use if:

  • You’re allergic to azelaic acid or any ingredient, especially propylene glycol.
  • Other excipients include: Arlatone 983S, cutina CBS, cetearyl octanoate, glycerol 85%, benzoic acid, purified water.

Use with caution:

  • Pregnancy: Discuss risks/benefits with your doctor.
  • Breastfeeding: Absorption into blood is very limited, but consult your doctor.
  • Avoid eyes, mouth, and mucous membranes.

Drug interactions: Consult your doctor before combining with other acne treatments like benzoyl peroxide or retinoids, as this may cause excessive dryness.
